Immutable Backups Are Strong Protection Against Ransomware
Ransomware Definition (proofpoint.com)
Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) that threatens to publish or blocks access to data or a computer system, usually by encrypting it, until the victim pays a ransom fee to the attacker. In many cases, the ransom demand comes with a deadline. If the victim doesn’t pay in time, the data is gone forever.
Ransomware attacks are all too common these days. Major companies in North America and Europe alike have fallen victim to it. Cybercriminals will attack any consumer or any business and victims come from all industries.
Prorizon Response
Prorizon has implemented Veeam's "V11: Immutable Primary Backup Storage" methodology. It entails installing a Linux management server. Then assigning drive space where backup files are written with the immutable drive bit set. It allows the data to only be written once, but read many times.
In the case of a Ransomware attack, the malware, finds a entry point (typically through phishing emails) and proliferates viruses to every sever and PC. The virus will either immediately or based on a timer encrypt all the OS and data files on the platform. Once complete, the business or user is notified who to contact to pay a ransom fee to get the unlock key.
Strategy Applied
Using Veeam's immutable backup methodology, our VMWare backup files can be safely retrieved and restored onto reloaded or new hardware for fast disaster recovery. Prorizon's strategy involves creating a full-backup of all production files each weekend and creating incremental-backups every hour until the next full-backup is created. Multiple weeks of files are retained and periodically overwritten. These backup files are retained in the AWS cloud are retained for 30 days to ensure extra security and rapid recovery. This technique ensures Prorizon in the event of a Ransomware attack that it's customers would lose no more than an hour or so of data.
